Be Kind, Please Rewind
JUN 22, 2017 - JUL 15, 2017
Gallery MOMO, Cape Town, South Africa.

Gallery MOMO Cape Town is pleased to present Be Kind. Please Rewind; a group exhibition of local and international artists who engage with history and memory through the medium of film and video. By grappling with personal histories and collective memories, nostalgia, and storytelling, the videos in this exhibition seek to explore the various complexities of video’s relationship to the construction and perception of history and memory.

Be Kind. Please Rewind is Gallery MOMO’s third annual video exhibition, marking the gallery’s sustained commitment to providing a platform for furthering the medium of film and video art. Gallery MOMO is proud to be the only gallery that has a full video exhibition in South Africa.

The collaborative installation Still-life with Three Suspended Bodies, by Kyu Sang Lee and Martin Wilson, was conceived as a material experiment to embody the concept of memory. The artists eschewed traditional flat surfaces like walls or screens, opting instead for a three-dimensional arrangement that underscores the ephemeral and unstable nature of memory. In this spatial setting, the absence of physical substance in the imagery results in its fusion with the objects' surfaces within the space. This interaction adds a layer of complexity, making the scene more intricate and less explanatory. The convergence of these elements introduces a heightened sense of tension and uncertainty, further emphasizing the transience of material forms in capturing and conveying memory. This work presents a critical exploration of memory's intangibility and the challenges of its physical representation.
